Blumhouse is set to rehire Octavia Spencer for the sequel to Ma.
Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer is set to reprise one of her most memorable roles with the announcement of a sequel to the 2019 horror film, Ma. Spencer collaborated with her director from The Help, Tate Taylor, to guide the revenge thriller to a worldwide box office total of $60 million. This feat is particularly noteworthy as it was achieved on a Blumhouse budget of only $5 million.
The news was revealed at the studio's The Business of Fear event, where horror chief Jason Blum remarked, “Ma has become a social phenomenon since its 2019 release, with fans enthusiastically responding to the film and Octavia’s iconic portrayal of Ma. Ma likes to say ‘don’t make me drink alone,’ so we’re excited that Octavia will be joining us again for a second round.”
In the first film, Spencer portrayed a socially isolated woman named Sue Ann, who befriends a group of teenagers and offers them alcohol, allowing them to party at her home. Just when the teens think they’re in for a great time, eerie events begin to unfold, leading them to question the true motives of their new friend.
