Sentimental Value Trailer: Joachim Trier's Cannes Champion Releases This November
After the success of The Worst Person in the World, Danish-Norwegian director Joachim Trier returned to the Cannes Film Festival with his new film, Sentimental Value, a tale centered on family and filmmaking that earned him the Cannes Grand Prix. Starring Renate Reinsve, Stellan Skarsgård, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, and Elle Fanning, NEON has scheduled the film's release for November 7 and has just unveiled the first trailer.
The synopsis reads: “Sisters Nora and Agnes reconnect with their estranged father, the charming Gustav, a once-celebrated director who offers stage actress Nora a part in what he hopes will be his comeback film. When Nora declines, she soon learns he has given her role to an enthusiastic young Hollywood star. Consequently, the two sisters must navigate their complicated relationship with their father while also dealing with an American actress thrust into the midst of their intricate family dynamics.”
In his review, Luke Hicks noted, “Like all of Trier's films, Sentimental Value is co-written with Eskil Vogt. Their screenplay is captivating in how it engages viewers with something seemingly ordinary without ever under-explaining or over-explaining. It's a dialogue-heavy film; this might not always be seen as a compliment, but here, the conversations are enjoyable and could help any viewer confront some of their own family issues. In fact, the dialogue could easily continue much longer. The characters are well-developed, the language feels genuine, and the backstories and current narratives are thoroughly engaging. The exchanges feel less like scripted dialogue and more like authentic moments that have been fortunate enough to be captured.”
