Emulsion Episode 11 – Reviving Hearts of Darkness with Fax Bahr and James Mockoski
When discussing documentaries centered on filmmaking, the conversation likely begins with Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse. It's possible the film you're thinking of was created by someone inspired by Hearts of Darkness, or if the film was made earlier, it might have been directed by someone who later viewed Hearts of Darkness and wished they had crafted a similarly remarkable film. This is not to diminish any other films within the genre; rather, it highlights that no other documentary truly reflects and resonates with the subject matter like this one does.
Although it has been available for some time, the film—quite different from Apocalypse Now—has only recently been restored by American Zoetrope and is now being released in theaters. The restoration was managed by James Mockoski, who has been instrumental in the recent wave of Coppola restorations and recuts. I was therefore delighted to chat with him and Hearts’ co-director, Fax Bahr, about the film’s impact, its restoration process, and what Francis Ford Coppola has in store following Megalopolis.
