Chris Columbus believes that remaking Home Alone would be a significant error.
This falls under the category of ‘Stating the Obvious’, but as we near the 35th anniversary of Home Alone, director Chris Columbus has expressed that any efforts to remake the beloved comedy would be a significant misstep. The director, known for his work on Harry Potter and more recently as a producer on Nosferatu, discussed the potential for rebooting his 1990 film, which was penned by the renowned screenwriter John Hughes (The Breakfast Club) and earned $476 million globally.
Columbus stated that the notion of a remake should be left untouched, remarking, “I think Home Alone truly represents a special moment in time that can’t be replicated.” He further emphasized, “I believe it’s an error to attempt to revisit something we created 35 years ago. It ought to be left as is.”
In 2021, Disney disregarded this counsel with the release of their Disney+ film Home Sweet Home Alone, featuring Archie Yates (JoJo Rabbit) as the neglected youth, alongside Ellie Kemper, Rob Delaney, Aisling Bea, and Kenan Thompson. It is safe to say that it wasn’t particularly well-received.
Conversely, the original film is regarded as a Christmas classic, showcasing Macaulay Culkin as the 8-year-old Kevin McCallister, a clever boy accidentally left behind when his large family heads to Paris for the holidays, forcing him to defend his home against two burglars (Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern). Several lesser sequels followed, with only the 1992 sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York coming close to matching the original's charm.
