Erika Henningsen, Blake Roman, and Amir Talai from Hazbin Hotel offer a sneak peek into season 2.
With Amazon Prime and A24 preparing to launch the second season of the animated musical comedy *Hazbin Hotel*, voice actors Erika Henningsen, Blake Roman, and Amir Talai attended Fan Expo Canada to share insights into what fans can expect for their characters in the upcoming season.
*Hazbin Hotel* centers on Charlie (Henningsen), the daughter of Lucifer and the Princess of Hell, as she endeavors to find a way to redeem sinners and send them to Heaven. With assistance from Alastor (Talai), a demon with unclear motives and history, and her first guest Angel Dust (Roman), they establish the Hazbin Hotel as a sanctuary for reforming demons.
The series has an extensive background, as creator Vivienne Medrano launched the project with a pilot produced for her YouTube channel in 2019. Following her work on *Helluva Boss*, she collaborated with Amazon and A24 to develop a full series that debuted last year. The show gained significant popularity, expanding its already committed fanbase, and was subsequently renewed for both a third and fourth season after an early order for the second season.
The voice cast discussed their perspectives on season two, with some feeling the weight of expectations after the show's initial success. Talai expressed anxiety, noting, “It’s not so much that I had to try something new, but I felt a different kind of responsibility, a new weight that I hadn’t experienced before. After seeing the reactions to the show and my character, it added pressure to get it right for Viv and the fans. I approached season one with a carefree attitude, but for season two, I was very focused on not messing it up.”
Roman shared a contrasting sentiment, stating, “It’s amusing because I felt the opposite. I was more stressed in season one since it was my first voice role, and I was thinking, ‘Don’t mess this up, Blake.’ By season two, having seen the positive response to the show, I felt I could just have fun. I know Richard [Horvitz, the voice director], I’m close with Viv now, and it’s a much more relaxed atmosphere.”
Regarding the potential trauma facing the characters and fans, Henningsen hinted that Charlie might encounter significant challenges in her quest for sinner redemption, particularly since Medrano has confirmed that the demon trio known as the Vees—especially Vox—will serve as the main antagonists. She mentioned that fans could experience strong reactions to Charlie’s decisions as she continues her battle.
“I sometimes feel a deep protectiveness for Charlie. I understand what fans love about her and what might frustrate them,” Henningsen explained. “ There will be moments when she makes decisions that may irritate fans, but I trust Viv’s overarching plan. This season is about Charlie's personal growth, and while fans might be upset with her choices, it’s part of the journey.”
Despite the serious themes, humor will remain integral to the show, with Roman praising a specific scene and song performed by Henningsen, saying, “There’s a moment where she’s incredibly funny! I wish I could discuss it more.”
Talai also commended Medrano and Henningsen for their leadership and influence, stating, “The atmosphere of a show is strongly influenced by its creator and lead. Viv has a clear vision but is also open to input from others. Erika is both professional and brings a sense of fun. Their distinct personalities shape the entire tone.”
