BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions Trailer: The Documentary of the Year Premieres This November

Describing Kahlil Joseph’s ambitious feature BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions as merely a documentary may underestimate the richness of its ideas, but it is undoubtedly the standout film I watched at the Sundance Film Festival last year. With its premiere at the New York Film Festival approaching, Rich Spirit has announced a release date of November 2 and has released the first teaser trailer.

“This project has been developed over years as a concept, evolving into an installation. Bringing it to theaters now feels essential, as the cinema is where images resonate differently, and the interaction with an audience enhances their impact. Our collaboration with Rich Spirit fosters this independence and guarantees that the release of this film honors the brilliance of everyone who contributed to its creation,” Joseph and producer Onye Anyanwu stated to Deadline.

In my Sundance review, I noted, “By celebrating and distilling centuries of Black history, which would take multiple lifetimes for any scholar to fully comprehend, Kahlil Joseph’s BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions moves away from traditional academic ethnographic studies to offer a vibrant, dynamic, and captivating experience. Drawing from Henry Louis Gates and Anthony Appiah’s W. E. B. Du Bois-inspired ‘Africana: The Encyclopedia of the African and African American Experience’ – the most recent edition of which spans nearly 4,000 pages – the film incorporates page numbers throughout its extensive references, making the viewing experience less daunting than the filmmaking process must have been. Merging and juxtaposing seemingly thousands of media elements with thought-provoking results, this directorial debut is both overwhelming in its swift pace and a generous invitation to further explore its extensive connections to the past, present, and future of Black history.”
