Stephan James takes on the role of Carl Weathers in I Play Rocky.
Stephan James, known for his role in If Beale Street Could Talk, is set to inherit Apollo Creed’s gloves to portray the late Carl Weathers in Amazon MGM Studios’ I Play Rocky. According to Deadline, James will star alongside Anthony Ippolito, who plays Sylvester Stallone, in the film that explores the creation of the 1977 Best Picture winner, Rocky.
Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Peter Farrelly (Green Book) and written by Peter Gamble (Trenches), I Play Rocky tells the ultimate underdog story behind a film that became the quintessential underdog movie.
Stephan James gained recognition in Barry Jenkins’ acclaimed love story If Beale Street Could Talk and went on to star alongside Julia Roberts in Amazon’s often-overlooked drama series Homecoming. Most recently, he appeared in the Netflix drama Night Always Comes, with his next project being the sci-fi action film War Machine on the same streaming platform.
