Father Mother Sister Brother Trailer: Jim Jarmusch’s Golden Lion Award Winner Set to Release This Christmas

Making its debut at the Venice Film Festival, where it won the well-deserved Golden Lion, Jim Jarmusch’s Father Mother Sister Brother stands out as one of the most beautifully crafted films of the year. Reverting to the episodic format reminiscent of Night on Earth and Coffee and Cigarettes, the film weaves together three family narratives featuring Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Adam Driver, Tom Waits, Mayim Bialik, Charlotte Rampling, Indya Moore, and Luka Sabbat. In anticipation of MUBI’s release on December 24, the trailer and poster have been unveiled.

The synopsis states: “Awarded the Golden Lion for Best Film at the 2025 Venice Film Festival, FATHER MOTHER SISTER BROTHER is the highly anticipated new work from Jim Jarmusch. Humorous, heartfelt, and keenly insightful, this film offers an intimate look at the complexities of family dynamics. Featuring Tom Waits, Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, Charlotte Rampling, Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Indya Moore, and Luka Sabbat, it's structured as a triptych divided into chapters set in New Jersey, Dublin, and Paris. Each narrative delves into the relationships between adult children and their somewhat detached parent(s), as well as among themselves. Combining outstanding performances from its ensemble cast with Jarmusch’s quirky and singular observations on everyday life, the renowned indie director’s latest work is a poignant reminder that while you can choose your friends and lovers, you cannot choose your family.”

In his review, Rory O’Connor remarked, “The director is certainly familiar with the anthology format; Mystery Train, Night on Earth, and Coffee and Cigarettes exemplify this often-overlooked style well. If the first two segments here had been shot in black-and-white, they could seamlessly fit into Coffee. While nobody smokes, the humor is similarly resonant, and the tea, though served in cups, still complements the vibe. Of the three segments, my favorite is the middle story where Krieps portrays Lilith, the free-spirited sister of Blanchett’s more conservative Timothea, a public servant who recently secured a position at the heritage society. The dynamic between the two actresses as they spar, with Rampling observing, is likely worth the ticket price.”
