The 12 Greatest Movie Plot Twists Ever, Ranked from Least to Most Impressive

Here are the greatest movie plot twists, ranked from least to most impressive.

As you'll notice, we tend to favor twists that transform a film rather than those that conclude it.

However, we're fans of plot twists in all forms.

      But First

Many surprises in films don't actually qualify as twists. A twist fundamentally alters our perception of the story, while a reveal is simply a shocking moment.

We enjoy surprises—such as those found in Silence of the Lambs—but they don’t necessarily prompt a reevaluation of the entire narrative. The Crying Game also features a well-known reveal, yet it doesn't significantly impact the story. Citizen Kane has its own famous surprise ending, which doesn't notably change the film's direction—it's more of a subtle touch.

With that in mind, we present the 12 Best Movie Plot Twists, Ranked. Beware of spoilers! If you wish to avoid them, you can read only the “The Plot” section of each entry and skip the rest. We’d prefer you watch these films unspoiled.

These twists are listed from least to most impressive.

      Number 12: Primal Fear

      Paramount

The Plot: Ambitious defense attorney Martin Vail (Richard Gere) defends Aaron Stampler (Ed Norton), a seemingly meek altar boy accused of murdering a Catholic archbishop. Vail suspects that years of abuse, including from the archbishop, caused Aaron to develop a dissociative identity disorder, adopting the violent persona of Roy.

The Plot Twist (Spoiler): In the end, Aaron reveals to his lawyer that he has been faking his disorder and, in reality, he is more similar to the violent Roy than the gentle Aaron.

Why It’s Good: Ed Norton delivers a strong performance, making what might seem an absurd twist compelling. This twist ranks lowest on our list because we prefer twists that occur earlier in the story for a greater impact. While we appreciate a twist at the end, we value those revealed earlier or in the middle of a film even more.

      Number 11: Frozen

The Plot: Princess Elsa (Idina Menzel) inadvertently unleashes her concealed ice powers while becoming frustrated with her sister Anna (voiced by Kristen Bell) wanting to marry the recently met Prince Hans (voiced by Santino Fontana).

The Plot Twist: We discover late in the movie that Hans doesn’t genuinely love Anna; he is actually cold-hearted. So, the anticipated kiss that seems to fit the classic fairy tale ending does not occur.

Why It Works: We love well-executed twists in children's films, especially one that conveys the message of being cautious with strangers. Frozen skillfully sets up the twist with clever misdirection in a standout musical number where Hans and Anna appear to connect, leading to the question of whether it’s genuine.

      Number 10: Chinatown

      Paramount – Credit: C/O

The Plot: Set in the 1930s, the neo-noir film features private detective Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson) entangled in a complex investigation involving the Los Angeles water supply and affluent Noah Cross, initiated by Evelyn Mulwray (Faye Dunaway).

The Plot Twist (Spoiler): During a confrontation with Gittes, Evelyn reveals a disturbing truth: Cross, her father, raped her at the age of 15, resulting in the birth of her child, Katherine, whom she grimly calls “my sister and my daughter.”

Why It’s Good: This shocking revelation amplifies the malevolence of Cross, who abuses both the land and his own daughter, raising the stakes in a narrative that could have been dull. It's introduced early enough to cast a dark shadow over the film and ignite outrage against the villain.

      Number 9: Fight Club

      20th Century Fox – Credit: C/O

The Plot: An unnamed protagonist (Edward Norton), searching for a more meaningful existence, creates a fight club with charismatic Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), a stranger he meets during monotonous business trips, leading to a campaign of rebellion against consumerism.

The Plot Twist (Spoiler): The protagonist has been Tyler Durden all along, acting as a cooler imaginary friend.

Why It’s Good: If you were blindsided (as I was when I first saw Fight Club in theaters in 1999), it felt like a punch. Though it appears a bit late in the narrative, it ultimately hits hard. Once revealed, the first rule of Fight Club was not to discuss the surprise.

Number 8: The Wizard of Oz

      MGM – Credit: C/O

The Plot: After being swept away by a tornado from Kansas, Dorothy (Judy Garland) lands in Oz, where she joins the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion on a journey along the Yellow Brick Road to see the Wizard, hoping he will fulfill their wishes.

The Plot Twist (Spoiler): The Wizard (Frank
