The 6K restoration of Werner Herzog's "Cave of Forgotten Dreams" is set to be released in IMAX.
One of Werner Herzog’s most captivating documentaries has undergone an impressive restoration and re-release. Today, IFC announced that a 6K restoration of Cave of Forgotten Dreams, Herzog’s 3D documentary that delves into the highly restricted Chauvet Cave—home to some of the earliest known human artworks—will feature special IMAX screenings across the country on April 15 and April 19 to celebrate its 15th anniversary. These IMAX presentations will be followed by a general theatrical release starting April 24.
Here’s the synopsis: “Naturally sealed for over 20,000 years, the Chauvet Cave and its ancient paintings remain exceptionally well-preserved. Access to this site is so limited that, when Herzog began filming, fewer individuals had entered the cave than had walked on the moon. With unprecedented authorization from the French government, Herzog and a minimal crew of just four people filmed under strict regulations, utilizing custom-built digital cameras small enough to comply with preservation standards. The outcome was an extraordinary visual documentation of the cave's surreal beauty—its crystalline formations and remarkably intact evidence of early human creativity, the natural cathedral where art first emerged.”
IFC points out that the production encountered significant technical challenges, with many visual flaws effectively “baked in” due to both the nascent stage of 3D filmmaking in 2010 and the severe time constraints during filming. A decade later, advancements in technology finally enabled the complete realization of Herzog’s original vision along with that of the early paleolithic artists. Starting in 2020, the restoration team embarked on a meticulous technical process, going back to the raw footage to reconstruct the film shot by shot. Each frame had to be restored twice—once for each eye—to satisfy the requirements of a genuine 3D master. Over the span of five years, the team also revisited the original audio recordings made inside the cave, crafting a completely new, immersive sound mix to complement the enhanced visuals.
