Dolphins and Drugs: Michael Almereyda and Courtney Stephens Discuss Documenting the Work of John Lilly

How frequently do you consider dolphins? It's a subject worthy of reflection, particularly regarding the intriguing documentary John Lilly and the Earth Coincidence Control Office, which focuses on a man whose research with dolphins blurred the lines between science and counterculture. The film is directed by Michael Almereyda and Courtney Stephens. Almereyda is more recognized for his narrative films, including the recently restored Nadja, but his profiles of artists like Sam Shepard, William Eggleston, and Hampton Fancher make him a great fit for this project. On the other hand, Stephens is a prominent documentary filmmaker who recently created Invention, a docufiction hybrid that explores unique experiments and the conspiracies they might have sparked.

With voiceover by Chloe Sevigny and an entrancing soundtrack, John Lilly provides a rich exploration of a complex individual. I interviewed Almereyda and Stephens as their film begins its theatrical release through Oscilloscope.
