The most recent Commando Comics honor Australian and New Zealand troops this ANZAC Day.
DC Thompson’s latest Commando Comics, released to coincide with ANZAC Day on April 25th, features four tales highlighting the valiant efforts of Australian and New Zealand soldiers. Enthusiasts of Commando Comics can explore two new stories set in North Africa during World War II, alongside a couple of classic tales from 40 to 50 years ago.
In "Humpback Heroes," issue 5951 (Home of Heroes), Captain Tom Best and his troops have been engaged in a prolonged battle against the Germans in the scorching, dry desert of Tobruk. Just when they are pulled out for some well-deserved rest, they expect to relax without the threat of gunfire, but their superiors have different plans. With thoughts of rest swiftly vanished, Tom and his men receive orders for a mission deep behind enemy lines to sabotage an Afrika Korps fuel dump, and they must execute it all while disguised and riding camels. This story is penned by Brent Towns, illustrated by Jaume Forns, and features cover art by Simon Prichard.
In "Company of Heroes," issue 5952 (Gold), Lieutenant Brian Lawson arrives at the barracks of the renowned Hyderabad Fusiliers, hoping for an easy desk job. For a time, it appears that he might actually get his wish, but then war erupts with Japan. Lawson is quickly transferred to the Company of Heroes, and the nature of the war changes drastically from that point. This classic narrative was initially released in 1971 as issue 610, crafted by Eric Hebden, with illustrations by Gordon C Livingstone.
Issue 5953, "Terror Train" (For Action and Adventure), authored by Rossa McPhillips, transports readers to Tunisia in 1943, where a German military supply train is traversing the desert towards German lines. Heavily armed with anti-aircraft guns, this colossal train poses a significant danger to Allied forces. To stop this train service, Captain Mike Lambert and his New Zealand Long Range Desert Group must battle through each carriage to eliminate the German forces and obliterate this supply route for good.
Lastly, issue 5954 (Silver) "Spring the Trap" follows Commando officer Richard Adam as he guides his skilled team into the Italian mountains to destroy a dam of strategic importance. He anticipated this mission would be like any other, but this time, he was mistaken. This story was first released in 1985 as No. 1864, written by McDevitt, with cover art by Jeff Bevan and internal art by CT Rigby.
These four fresh adventures will be available in newsagents and on the Commando Comics website starting April 23rd.
