The viral internet phenomenon Cartoon Cat is set to make its debut on the big screen.
Another week brings another internet IP secured by a major studio, this time to get its hands on the new Backroom. Sony’s TriStar Pictures has acquired Trevor Henderson’s Cartoon Cat for a film adaptation.
Following Warner Bros.’ expensive acquisition of Henderson’s Siren Head—which is being written by Zach Cregger (Weapons) and directed by Brian Duffield (Whalefall)—Deadline reports that TriStar Pictures is actively seeking a director to bring Cartoon Cat to the screen.
Created by Canadian creature designer Trevor Henderson, Cartoon Cat is characterized as a sinister internet cryptid resembling a frightening animated cat. It preys on abandoned buildings, using its nostalgic 1930s cartoon appearance to entice unsuspecting victims and cause chaos.
In light of the $50 million earnings from Markiplier’s Iron Lung, and the $365 million (and counting) revenue from Kane Parson’s Backrooms, it’s likely that Cartoon Cat will be fast-tracked to theaters.
