4 Unexpectedly Simple Methods for a Longer Life, Based on Netflix's Secrets of the Blue Zones

Do you wish to extend your lifespan? According to Netflix’s Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones, it could be simpler than you believe.

      What Are Blue Zones?

Blue Zones, as detailed in the documentary, are regions globally where people tend to live the longest, often reaching the age of 100. In Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones, author and journalist Dan Buettner explores these Blue Zones.

His research and discussions with centenarians reveal that the secrets to living to 100—while remaining active and fully enjoying life—are more attainable for the average person than one might imagine.

In The Blue Zones, Perspective Is Key

Dan Buettner identified four main principles that were consistently observed across the five Blue Zones he visited: Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Loma Linda, California; Ikaria, Greece; and Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula. These principles could potentially help you prolong your life.

The first principle is having a sense of purpose. All older individuals in the Blue Zones shared a reason that motivated them to get out of bed each day. They also embraced a higher power and allocated time for relaxation and self-care.

In Okinawa, Japan, they use the term “ikigai,” which translates to “a reason for being.”

One’s ikigai doesn’t have to be complex—it could be something as simple as caring for a garden daily or crafting wooden figurines. It could involve writing songs or working as a crossing guard to help others cross the street.

In Loma Linda, California, the Seventh-Day Adventist community enjoys restful Saturdays, dedicated solely to relaxation. In Nicoya, Costa Rica, workdays conclude in the early afternoon, allowing friends to gather at local bars to share drinks, dance, and enjoy each other’s company.

Faith or a sense of spirituality was a common element in all Blue Zones, albeit in different forms. Sardinians attend church almost daily, while in Okinawa, one man described his daily prayers for the safety of his loved ones.

The faith aspect of Blue Zones is entirely personal; what matters is having a source of comfort that provides solace in difficult times.

You Don’t Need a Gym to Get Active

Interestingly, across the Blue Zones, most elderly individuals gain their exercise through natural movements in their everyday lives rather than through gym workouts.

In Sardinia, older residents walk uphill on cobblestone streets to reach church, which helps strengthen their lower bodies and reduces the risk of falls and fractures. In Okinawa, seniors engage in natural exercise while gardening and frequently getting up and down from the floor throughout the day.

In Nicoya, 100-year-old Ramiro Guadamuz still rides horses and chops wood daily.

Additionally, it's common in Nicoya for people to grind their own masa on stones and prepare tortilla dough using a hand-crank, utilizing their muscles through daily tasks instead of using gym equipment.

Moreover, the fact that Nicoya is one of the poorest areas in Costa Rica illustrates that long life can be achieved even without considerable wealth.

      Everyone Needs Companionship

Another shared attribute among all Blue Zones is a strong sense of community. Centenarians value spending time with family, maintaining long-term romantic relationships, and surrounding themselves with friends who engage in shared meaningful activities.

In Sardinia, nursing homes are rare as elderly individuals often live with family, creating a mutually beneficial dynamic. The younger generation cares for the elderly, helping combat loneliness, while older adults provide wisdom and support for the children.

In Okinawa, many seniors form small groups called “moais” with friends who support each other through difficult times, often meeting for games and other activities.

In Loma Linda, older adults participate in choirs and sports together. In Ikaria, Greece, it is common for people to gather for communal dinners, enjoy local wine, play music, and dance.

The resulting longevity of these communities highlights the importance of having a close-knit support network.

      Plant-Based Diets Are Beneficial

Another defining feature of the Blue Zones is a nutritious diet primarily based on plant-based foods and a culture of intuitive eating. In
