Black Zombie Trailer Uncovers the Disturbing Origins of a Horror Classic

      Selected for screenings at the SXSW Film Festival 2026, Hot Docs 2026, the Fantasia International Film Festival, and the 2026 Black Star Film Festival, Maya Annik Bedward’s documentary *Black Zombie* is set for a theatrical release beginning next month. Ahead of its debut on September 11 in New York City and Los Angeles, Kino Lorber has unveiled the first trailer.

      Here’s the synopsis: “*BLACK ZOMBIE* delves into the blood-drenched spectacle of contemporary horror to reveal the disturbing and concealed origins of the zombie. Long before it was associated with flesh-eating creatures, the zombie served as a living metaphor for slavery: not a monster but the ultimate victim of colonial authority. A symbol of lost autonomy became an object of fear, while Black spiritual practices were distorted, sensationalized, and erased. Director Maya Annik Bedward traces the transformation of the zombie from colonial Haiti to present-day Hollywood, reevaluating iconic films like *WHITE ZOMBIE*, *NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD*, and *THE SERPENT AND THE RAINBOW* through archival materials, real-life scenes, and interviews with cultural historians, artists, and genre icons including Yves-Grégory Francois, Mambo Labelle Déesse, Slash, Tom Savini, and Zandashé Brown. Serving as both a cultural assessment and a horror remix, *BLACK ZOMBIE* reveals how a figure rooted in enslavement, spiritual belief, and resistance was morphed into one of pop culture's most lucrative monsters.”

      In his review, Jared Mobarak stated, “More than merely reclaiming the zombie concept from the quick reactions spurred by *Night of the Living Dead*, Maya Annik Bedward’s *Black Zombie* retrieves Vodou from the colonial fear-mongering that sought to demonize Black individuals globally.
