John Wilson Makes His Cinematic Debut in the First Trailer for The History of Concrete
After several seasons entertaining viewers on HBO, John Wilson is making his way to the big screen. The History of Concrete, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, has been acquired by Magnolia Pictures and is set to be released next month. In anticipation of its theatrical launch on September 18, the complete trailer has now been unveiled.
The synopsis reads: “Following the conclusion of his TV series, filmmaker John Wilson seeks inspiration and structure from the foundational elements of his cherished New York City. Concrete, recognized as the most widely used building material in the world, serves as a constant force in his life, prompting him to create the definitive documentary on the subject. To present this seemingly dull tale, he opts to employ the industry-recognized Hallmark formula to enhance the film’s attractiveness. However, his foundation begins to crumble—both literally and metaphorically—as he grapples with the challenge of maintaining artistic freedom amidst the constraints of the contemporary film industry.”
Caleb Hammond remarked in his review, “Similar to a movie tie-in, John Wilson’s debut documentary feature, The History of Concrete, seamlessly continues from where his HBO series How To with John Wilson concluded after three seasons. An increased public profile does not guarantee a bigger, better endeavor. Instead, it’s depicted through Wilson discovering an empty weed bag featuring an unauthorized image of himself. With the large crew once available to him now gone, Wilson returns to his roots, capturing the everyday scenes of life in New York City on his own.”
