A sequel series to Buffy the Vampire Slayer featuring Sarah Michelle Gellar is nearing a pilot order at Hulu.
Prepare yourselves, Slayer enthusiasts. Variety has reported that Hulu is close to ordering a pilot for a sequel series to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with original star Sarah Michelle Gellar in discussions to reprise her legendary role.
The proposed sequel will concentrate on a new Slayer, adhering to the show's established lore that a Slayer is chosen every generation to safeguard the world from vampires, demons, and various supernatural dangers. Gellar is expected to take on a recurring role rather than being the lead, allowing the spotlight to shift to the new Slayer.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer centered on Buffy Summers, a Slayer destined to defend the world against otherworldly threats. The series drew inspiration from the 1992 cult classic film of the same name but is separate from the film, establishing its own continuity. Created by Joss Whedon, the series is celebrated as one of the best television shows from the late 90s and early 2000s, and along with shows like The X-Files, it helped popularize serialized storytelling in television rather than episodic plots that merely loosely connected.
If the new series gets the green light, it will be showrun, written, and executive produced by Nora and Lila Zuckerman, with Chloé Zhao, director of Nomadland and Eternals, set to direct and executive produce through her company Book of Shadows. Gellar will also serve as an executive producer alongside original Buffy executive producers Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzui, and Dolly Parton.
Despite creating the original series, Whedon will not participate in the sequel following statements from several cast members of the original show, notably Charisma Carpenter and Michelle Tratchenberg, regarding his behavior on the Buffy and Angel sets, which they described as mistreatment toward them and other staff. This behavior, along with his actions during his oversight of WB’s DCEU film Justice League and various personal controversies, resulted in the cancellation of his HBO series The Nevers and other projects.
