Grand Tour Trailer: Miguel Gomes' Captivating Journey Premieres This March
Miguel Gomes, the Portuguese director known for The Tsugua Diaries, Arabian Nights, and Tabu, made his eagerly anticipated comeback at last year’s Cannes Film Festival with the captivating journey Grand Tour. After winning Best Director at the festival, MUBI has announced a U.S. release starting March 28, with a streaming option on their platform available from April 18. In advance of this launch, a new trailer and poster have been released.
The synopsis reads: “GRAND TOUR, the work of Cannes Best Director winner Miguel Gomes, is a stunning journey of love, escape, and pursuit. Set in 1917 Burma, a British civil servant leaves his fiancée behind, only to have her relentlessly follow him across Asia. It is a playful yet poignant reimagining of the pursuit film, merging vibrant 16mm black-and-white cinematography with archival footage.”
Rory O’Connor remarked in his Cannes review, “If Chris Marker and Preston Sturges had collaborated on a film, it might resemble Grand Tour, a grand narrative that travels from Rangoon to Manila, passing through Bangkok, Saigon, and Osaka, intertwining the stories of two unlikely lovers on their way to a significant reunion. The stowaways are quintessentially Sturgian: he is the sophisticated man on the run, while she is the daring woman on a quest to find him. Their scenes depict 1917, filmed in a traditional studio style, yet are presented in a modern travelogue format—as if we are tracking not just their epic love story but also the personal journeys of the director.”
