David Leitch will direct the Gears of War movie.
The film adaptation of Gears of War is making significant progress, as Netflix has enlisted director David Leitch (known for John Wick and Bullet Train) to lead the project, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Originally launched in 2006 for Xbox, Gears of War is set on the planet Sera, where humanity faces extinction following a lengthy war against the underground creatures called the Locust Horde. In a final effort to survive, Marcus Fenix, a former soldier of the Coalition of Governments (COG), is released from prison to spearhead Delta Squad's mission to eradicate the Locust once and for all.
The screenplay for the Gears of War movie is being crafted by Jon Spaihts, who worked on Dune, with David Leitch and Kelly McCormick producing for 87North alongside Gears developer The Coalition.
Gears of War is one of the most successful video game franchises, featuring five main series games and one prequel, in addition to a variety of books and comics. Another prequel, Gears of War: E-Day, is currently in development and will delve into the onset of the Locust War as they rise from beneath Sera to exterminate humanity. Additionally, a remastered version of the original game, Gears of War: Reloaded, is set to release on Xbox, PlayStation 5, and PC in August.
