Dynamite reinterprets Red Sonja with "Sonja Reborn" by Christopher Priest.
Having guided Dynamite Entertainment’s interpretation of Vampirella, renowned comic book creator Christopher Priest is now shifting his focus to another of the publisher's key characters with Sonja Reborn, a new series that reinterprets the legendary Red Sonja with a novel twist on the She-Devil with a Sword.
“We might have titled this book ‘Becoming Red Sonja,’” Priest mentioned. “The narrative explores the culture shock of an assumed nightmare from which one cannot escape. Both Black Panther and Quantum & Woody utilized observational humor through a sidecar character—an external voice commenting on the fictional universe it observes, highlighting the drama and absurdity of a completely deranged world. Sonja Reborn is our ‘Kelvin Universe’ alternate interpretation of the classic, diverging from familiar paths to spiral chaotically into the unknown. I’m thoroughly enjoying writing it, which serves as both an endorsement and a warning!”
Sonja Reborn introduces a new Sonja for a contemporary era. Ancient, interdependent gods The Light and The Dark are embroiled in a cosmic contest to determine the world's fate. Young British diplomatic clerk Maggie Sutherland, abducted from 2025, finds herself as their pawn. Torn from a modern 21st-century existence and thrust into the untamed realms of Hyboria, Maggie awakens transformed into the fiery-haired Hyrkanian reaver Red Sonja.
Navigating a perilous environment filled with gods, monsters, and constant threats, along with new allies and adversaries, Maggie/Sonja must unravel the fate that has befallen her and find her way back home. Together, Priest and Sonja series artist Alessandro Miracolo embark on a journey to reinterpret the crimson-maned warrior from the inside out, crafting an engaging reimagining of Maggie’s heroic journey to uncover what it truly requires for a woman to survive and flourish in a harsh world of swords, sorcery, and brutality!
In addition to the main cover by Stjepan Šejić, Sonja Reborn #1 will also be offered with variant covers by Joshua Middleton, Chad Hardin, Greg Land, and a cosplay cover featuring Ani-Mia.
Sonja Reborn #1 is set to be released in August 2025.
