Taika Waititi set to helm the upcoming Judge Dredd film.
The legendary British comic book character Judge Dredd appears poised for a return to the cinema, though potentially not in the form that many fans of the 2000 AD lawman—particularly those who appreciated the 2012 film featuring Karl Urban—might have wished for.
As reported by THR this week, director Taika Waititi, known for Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit, is set to helm a fresh adaptation of Dredd, with a script penned by British writer Drew Pearce (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, The Fall Guy).
It’s said that this new project will draw inspiration from the original comic source rather than the earlier adaptations—most notably, the 1995 Judge Dredd film starring Sylvester Stallone, which was a significant box-office failure. The new film aims to embrace the comic's dark humor and world-building while also being characterized as “a fun sci-fi blockbuster.” It holds the promise of establishing a shared Judge Dredd universe, which could be further explored through additional movies and TV shows.
This news puts a stop to the ongoing fan campaign for Karl Urban to return for Dredd 2 or for the long-in-development Judge Dredd: Mega-City One TV series, which 2000 AD owners Rebellion began working on back in 2017. There have been no official updates regarding that project for several years, and with Rebellion also involved in producing this new film, it seems Mega-City One may have been sidelined.
It remains unclear how the Judge Dredd movie will affect Taika Waititi's other projects, including his long-anticipated Star Wars film, which hasn't progressed since its announcement in 2020. His upcoming feature, Klara and the Sun, starring Jenna Ortega and Amy Adams, is currently in post-production, and he has also recently been confirmed to direct the pilot for a Very Young Frankenstein TV series.
