Yi Yi Trailer: Edward Yang's Masterpiece of the 21st Century Gets a 4K Restoration
Regardless of the fact that a child born the day after Edward Yang’s passing will enter college this month, the Taiwanese director's reputation has risen significantly in the last 18 years, making a Criterion release or a restoration debut more thrilling than most new films. This, I believe, is a deserved recognition for work that deepens with each viewing and reveals new insights every time, making the 4K restoration of his final film, Yi Yi—a film that kicked off this cinematic century and remains nearly unmatched after 25 years—an occasion worth celebrating. Following its premiere at this year’s Cannes, the film will commence a national rollout on September 5 at Film at Lincoln Center, thanks to Janus Films, along with a new trailer showcasing some of the efforts by Pony Canyon, Inc.
Here’s the official synopsis: “The remarkable, globally celebrated Yi Yi (A One and a Two . . .), helmed by the late Taiwanese maestro Edward Yang, traces the life of a middle-class family in Taipei over the span of one year, starting from a wedding and concluding with a funeral. Whether depicting middle-aged father NJ’s hesitant rekindling with an old flame or young son Yang-Yang’s pursuit to capture the essence of reality through his cherished camera, the filmmaker skillfully imbues each stunning frame with a heartfelt clarity. This warm, expansive, and breathtaking intimate epic stands as one of the definitive masterpieces of the new century.”
