The cherished 1992 Amiga classic Apidya will be arriving on PC and consoles in 2026.
The Amiga is renowned for its excellent shoot-’em-ups, with the iconic 1992 Apidya standing out due to its vibrant settings, precise gameplay, and captivating design. Recently, the original developers of the game, along with a dedicated fan-turned-developer and ININ Games, announced Apidya’ Special, an authentic 24-bit pixel remake that is based on an abandoned 1990s console port, set to release on PC and consoles next year. Check out the new trailer below.
Apidya’ Special is a genuine remake, avoiding emulation, AI upscaling, and 3D models. Everything has been created from scratch with hand-drawn pixels and enthusiasm. This upcoming version will merge elements from the original game with entirely new pixel art, additional genuine sound effects, and, most excitingly, a remixed soundtrack by the legendary composer Chris Hülsbeck, who composed the fantastic music for the original.
Both a new generation of gamers and Amiga enthusiasts will experience Apidya’ Special in true widescreen with a new parallax effect. Alternatively, players can opt for a complete nostalgia trip by switching to the classic Amiga 4:3 mode, which looks, plays, and sounds just like it did in 1992. There will also be options for CRT effects, complete with a simulated shadow mask, scan lines, and more, sure to evoke fond memories.
Players can blast through five uniquely themed worlds (Meadow, Pond, Sewers, Cyber, Lair), each featuring five levels and hundreds of enemies. There will be 20 distinct bosses to defeat and a variety of hidden special stages. Additionally, players can experience random in-game events, including 'Night Mode,' which introduces new enemies.
Gamers will have the choice to tackle levels alone or join forces with a friend in co-op mode, with the second player controlling one of the helper drones. For those seeking an extra challenge, modern difficulty settings are available to provide either a tough experience or a more laid-back playthrough.
“We never imagined we’d revisit Apidya after all these years,” said Peter Thierolf, the game’s original creator. “However, thanks to new technology, the right team, and the enthusiasm of the community, we can finally produce the version we’ve always dreamed of.”
This remake of a cult classic will bring thrilling insect action to players on Xbox X|S, PlayStation 5, Switch, and PC in 2026.
