SYNOPSIS:
A small woodland creature and a magnificent bird unexpectedly exchange bodies, compelling them to work together to navigate the most thrilling adventure of their lives.
Set in a fantastical and enchanted woodland forest, Nathan Greno's animated film, aptly named Swapped, conveys familiar themes about the importance of unity and the experience of stepping into someone else's shoes. This message is presented rather overtly, even for children's media, but is enhanced by vibrant, meticulously crafted, and visually striking art design. The richly realized world within the film reflects the filmmaker's early passion for drawing and creating (he also directed Tangled, lending further credibility).
In collaboration with screenwriters John Whittington, Robert Snow, and Christian Magalhaes (with Nathan also credited for the story alongside Adam Karp), the film creates a backstory where animals once coexisted in harmony, until a vengeful Firewolf disrupted that peace, instigating conflict among them. This process involved the destruction of magical creatures depicted as walking orchids, which contained glowing purple orbs capable of swapping the bodies of animals, allowing them to experience life from different perspectives and develop new skills for survival.
Now, each species lives separately. The Pookoo, tiny creatures resembling a blend of rats and hedgehogs, adhere to a creed of mistrust toward other species due to their small size and low position in the food chain. Ollie (voiced by Michael B. Jordan, with a younger version voiced by Camden Brooks) once mistakenly trusted a similarly young Javan, a flamboyant peacock-like bird, hoping to teach her how to access seed pockets for food. However, the rest of her kind ended up stealing all the food, leaving him to regret ignoring his parents' advice (voiced by Cedric the Entertainer and Justina Machado).
An adventure soon unfolds when Ollie reconnects with Ivy (voiced by Juno Temple), still at odds despite their prior encounter, and they come across some long-lost magical orbs that result in their body swap. A series of comedic mishaps ensues as Ollie and Ivy struggle to adapt to their new forms and abilities while learning to help each other fly or utilize their keen senses to find another orb to return to their original bodies. Fortunately, they also meet a lonely fish (voiced by Tracy Morgan) who knows where the scattered orbs are and is eager to assist if it means finding companionship.
As noted, the humor primarily targets children, more so than is typical for animated features, which often seek to balance child-friendly jokes with clever elements for adult viewers. However, this focus isn't necessarily a drawback; the animation is incredibly beautiful, blending a lifelike quality with enchanting magic. Combined with a heartfelt story, endearing characters, and solid voice performances, the film is largely captivating.
In the hands of a less skilled art team, this might have come off as painfully generic. However, the painterly style and imaginative world-building redeem some of its lack of depth; Swapped has just enough magic to shine through.
