7 Excellent TV Shows That Lasted Just One Season
Here are seven fantastic one-season television shows.
The duration of a TV series is influenced by numerous factors, such as the writing, cast, timing, and cultural context. Even the finest shows may not survive beyond their inaugural season due to issues unrelated to the quality of the show, like creative disagreements behind the scenes, scheduling conflicts, or executive impatience.
With that in mind, here are seven remarkable shows that we wish had made it to a second season.
Pitch
Fox
Showrunner Dan Fogelman achieved significant success with This Is Us, along with other major projects, but his baseball-centric series Pitch didn’t make it past the first season.
The Fox series revolves around a young pitcher who makes history as the first woman to play in the Major Leagues after being called up by the San Diego Padres. It featured Kylie Bunbury as the rookie pitcher and TV veteran Mark-Paul Gosselaar.
The show garnered favorable reviews but ultimately struggled to attract a large viewership, airing opposite a more prominent sports event: Thursday Night Football.
Finder of Lost Loves
ABC
This is a lesser-known gem, but the concept of this 1984 ABC drama is hard to resist: After losing his wife, a widower chooses to start a private detective agency aimed at reuniting clients with former partners.
The cast included Anthony Franciosa, Deborah Adair, Anne Jeffreys, Richard Kantor, and Larry “Flash” Jenkins.
If you’re still uncertain, just listen to the theme song performed by Dionne Warwick and Luther Vandross, with music by Burt Bacharach.
Freaks & Geeks
NBC
It's surprising that Freaks & Geeks aired for just one season, given its significant impact. The show not only propelled the careers of stars like Seth Rogen, Linda Cardellini, James Franco, and Jason Segel but also became a cult classic set in the 1980s high school scene.
Created by Paul Feig and executive produced by Judd Apatow, the show was broadly praised, but unfortunate time slots kept it from reaching its audience. Nevertheless, it remains one of the most unforgettable one-season television programs.
Mike White, one of the show’s writers, eventually created the hit series White Lotus, which is now in production for its fourth season.
Models Inc.
Fox
A series set in a Los Angeles modeling agency starring Linda Gray and Carrie-Anne Moss seemed like a sure thing for more than one season, but sadly, Models Inc., from Spelling Entertainment, didn't get a chance to continue.
This prime time soap opera premiered on Fox on June 29, 1994. It had a strong lineage: it was a spin-off of Melrose Place and the third series within the Beverly Hills, 90210 franchise.
Unfortunately, the appeal of high cheekbones and Aaron Spelling could only carry a show so far.
Gabriel’s Fire
ABC
How could a show featuring James Earl Jones in an Emmy Award-winning role not make it to its second season?
Gabriel’s Fire was an American crime drama that debuted on ABC on September 12, 1990. Jones played the title role of Gabriel, a former Chicago police officer wrongly convicted of murdering a fellow officer.
It seems this show was unjustly sentenced too.
Swamp Thing (2019)
DC Universe
Even beloved comic book characters can sometimes fail to secure a second season. This was true for Swamp Thing, a superhero horror series created by Gary Dauberman and Mark Verheiden for the now-defunct DC Universe streaming service.
The series centers on Dr. Abby Arcane and the titular Swamp Thing, a creature who protects his Louisiana swamp and the surrounding natural world. The cast included Crystal Reed, Virginia Madsen, and Derek Mears.
Despite receiving critical acclaim, the series was canceled due to unfavorable circumstances. It thus joined the list of one-season TV shows.
The Grinder
Fox
In an ironic twist, the Rob Lowe-led series The Grinder is about a former actor who starred in a long-running, successful legal television show and decides to become a lawyer in real life.
Despite the great chemistry between Lowe and co-star Fred Savage, the show failed to achieve sufficient ratings for a second season.
On a positive note, Timothy Olyphant received a Critics’ Choice Award for his guest role on the show.
