Trailer for the 4K Restoration of Ngozi Onwurah's Welcome II the Terrordome Offers an Afrofuturist Perspective
This month, Ngozi Onwurah’s Welcome II the Terrordome will make its debut in a newly restored 4K version. It holds the distinction of being the first theatrically released British feature film directed by a Black woman. Scheduled for a July 31 release starting at NYC’s BAM, Janus Films has released a new trailer and poster for the 1995 film in anticipation of its premiere and subsequent national distribution.
Here’s the synopsis: “Ngozi Onwurah’s groundbreaking Afrofuturist film WELCOME II THE TERRORDOME made history as the first theatrically distributed British feature by a Black woman. Yet, upon its initial release, it was mostly overlooked by critics who failed to recognize the significance of its portrayal of a harsh dystopia where Black individuals are forced to reside in a slum named the Terrordome, amidst escalating racial tensions following a young boy’s death. Over thirty years later, Onwurah’s blend of social critique and genre elements appears strikingly relevant, showcasing her remarkable ability to create a cohesive cosmology that links the historical context of slavery with contemporary issues of police violence.”
