4 Surprisingly Simple Methods to Extend Your Lifespan, Based on Netflix's Secrets of the Blue Zones

Do you wish to extend your life? It may be simpler than you assume, as suggested by Netflix's Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones.

      What Are Blue Zones?

According to the documentary, Blue Zones are regions around the globe where individuals tend to have much longer lifespans, frequently reaching the age of 100. In Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones, author and journalist Dan Buettner explores these Blue Zones.

His research and conversations with centenarians reveal that the secrets to living to 100 years — while remaining active and fully enjoying life — are far more attainable for the average person than one might believe.

In The Blue Zones, Perspective Matters

Buettner identified four major insights that appeared consistently across the five Blue Zones he explored: Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Loma Linda, California; Ikaria, Greece; and Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula — insights that may help you add years to your life.

The first is having a sense of purpose. All elderly individuals in these zones had something that motivated them to rise each morning. They also held a belief in a higher power and took time for relaxation and self-care.

In Okinawa, Japan, there is a concept known as “ikigai,” which translates to “reason for being.”

An individual's ikigai doesn't need to be elaborate — it can be something as simple as nurturing a garden daily or crafting wooden figurines. It could also involve writing music or serving as a crossing guard to assist in safe street crossing.

In Loma Linda, California, the Seventh-Day Adventist community dedicates the Sabbath, or Saturday, to relaxation, using the time to unwind. In Nicoya, Costa Rica, the workday concludes in the early afternoon, allowing friends to gather at local bars for drinks, dancing, and laughter.

Faith or religion, in some form, was present in all Blue Zones, albeit in varying ways. In Sardinia, for instance, visiting church daily is customary. In Okinawa, one individual mentioned he prays daily for the safety of his loved ones.

The faith aspect in these Blue Zones can take any shape; what's essential is having a source of comfort during challenging times.

      Exercise Doesn't Require a Gym

Interestingly, most elderly individuals in the Blue Zones acquired their exercise through everyday activities rather than through gym workouts.

In Sardinia, older individuals trek uphill to church on cobblestone streets, which enhances their lower body strength and reduces the risk of falls. In Okinawa, seniors engage in natural exercises by tending gardens and regularly getting up and down from the floor.

In Nicoya, Costa Rica, 100-year-old Ramiro Guadamuz still rides horses and chops wood daily.

It was also common for residents in Nicoya to grind their own masa on stone and make tortillas by hand, engaging their muscles in everyday chores instead of relying on treadmills.

Moreover, the fact that Nicoya is one of the poorest regions in Costa Rica demonstrates that long life can be achieved without significant wealth.

      The Importance of Friendship

A third shared characteristic among the Blue Zones is a strong sense of community. Centenarians in these areas highly prioritize spending time with family, maintaining long-term romantic relationships, and being surrounded by friends who share meaningful experiences.

In Sardinia, elderly residents rarely live in nursing homes, as they often stay with family. This arrangement benefits both generations: the young help care for the elderly, fostering connections that prevent loneliness, while the elderly impart wisdom and assist with childcare.

In Okinawa, many seniors are part of small groups called “moais” that provide mutual support during tough times, coming together to engage in games and hobbies.

In Loma Linda, older members participate in choirs and sports. Meanwhile, in Ikaria, Greece, individuals often gather for dinner, enjoy local, naturally made wine, play music, and dance.

The longevity observed in these communities underscores the value of having close friendships that provide support.

Another defining feature of the Blue Zones is a nutritious diet centered around mostly plant-based foods and a culture of intuitive
