A Palestinian educator stands her ground in the U.S. trailer for Farah Nabulsi’s highly praised film, The Teacher.
Following the significant Oscar victory of No Other Land earlier this week, more films highlighting the struggles of the Palestinian people are receiving increased distribution in the United States. This coming spring, the drama The Teacher, directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Farah Nabulsi and featuring Saleh Bakri and Imogen Poots, will be released through Watermelon Pictures. With an April 11 release date approaching, the first trailer and poster have now been unveiled.
The synopsis reads: “A Palestinian school teacher (Saleh Bakri, The Band’s Visit) grapples with his precarious dedication to political resistance, while also providing emotional support to one of his students (Muhammad Abed El Rahman) and nurturing the possibility of a new relationship with a volunteer (Imogen Poots, The Father).”
In his review for TIFF, Jared Mobarak noted, “Writer-director Farah Nabulsi expertly illustrated the utter futility of life under occupation with her Oscar-nominated short The Present a couple of years back. By transforming the seemingly ordinary task of shopping for an anniversary gift into a depiction of how cruelly impossible it can be when armed individuals impose their will, she captured the pervasive frustration and inevitable anger that Palestinians endure daily. Therefore, it is unsurprising that her feature debut, The Teacher, follows this thematic path, utilizing the longer format to present an even more substantial example.”
